GM Frank E. Sanchez
World Head of Family Sokeship Council
We, of the World Head of Family Sokeship Council share your grief at the passing of the great Lion of Goju. His genius and contributions to American Karate will always be remembered. As a member of our Council, he was my personal friend and Advisor, I miss him dearly. As loyal soldiers of the Maestro’s great Army of legendary teachers and students, I know that you will carry on his tradition of martial arts excellence. May his spirit be with you and with us all in our journeys as career sensei.

SUPREME GRAND MASTER URBAN WAS AN AVID CHESS PLAYER. YOU COULD SEE HIM PLAYING ANY NUMBER OF HIS STUDENTS. ONE DAY ABOUT 11;30 P.M., O'SENSEI URBAN CALLED ME TO COME TO HIS HOME/DOJO TO PLAY SOME CHESS. I OF COURSE, SAID YES SENSEI, I'M ON MY WAY. NOT FORGETTING TO PACK MY GI, I LEFT MY HOUSE TO GO AND PLAY CHESS.
ON MY ARRIVAL THERE WOULD BE A GROUP OF BLACK BELT WAITING TO GET SOME SPARRING IN. USO SENSEI I SAID, ARE WE GOING TO PLAY CHESS? HE REPLIED, YES BUT FIRST WE MUST FIGHT FIRST.
NOW HE HAS REACHED HIS FINAL RANK, AS HE WOULD SAY, THE RANK OF MEMORY. HE IS ONCE AGAIN UNITED WITH O'SENSEIS YAMAGUCHI, AND OYAMA WHO WERE HIS TEACHERS, AND OF COURSE GRAND MASTERS FRANK RUIZ, PETE SIRINGANO, DON NAGEL, AND FLORENDO VISITACION.
SUPREME GRAND MASTER URBAN, REST EASY. YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED WHAT YOU SET OUT TO DO IN THE MARTIAL ARTS, AND YOU WILL BE REMEMBERED THOSE LIVES YOU HAVE TOUCHED. THERE WERE MANY, INCLUDING MY OWN.
GOD, KEEP GRAND MASTER URBAN IN THE PALM OF YOUR HANDS.
